Former U.S. Women’s National Team player appointed as league’s top advisor on Women’s Soccer

TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer League (USL) announced today the appointment of former United States Women’s National Team player and two-time Olympic champion Angela Hucles as the league’s new top advisor on Women’s Soccer.

“We’re very pleased to welcome someone of Angela’s professionalism and business acumen to our organization,” said USL Chief Executive Officer Alec Papadakis. “USL is a huge supporter of the women’s game and wants to continue to look at ways to support its growth and provide career opportunities for players, coaches and executives. Angela will be instrumental in guiding that strategy and creating a roadmap that can help us build a foundation and grow from the bottom up. She is one of the most respected women in soccer both on and off the field and her impressive qualities will serve USL well in this new advisory position.”

As a player, Hucles made 109 appearances for the United States, featuring prominently in the side’s 2008 victory at the Beijing Olympics. Hucles recorded four goals in the tournament to lead the side, including a pair of goals against Japan in the Semifinals. In addition to her two Olympic gold medals, Hucles also competed at both the 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the U.S. as the side finished third in each tournament.

After being named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team in each of her four years at the University of Virginia, Hucles competed throughout the 2000s at the club level, beginning her career in the USL W-League with Hampton Roads Piranhas in 2000. The following year she joined the Boston Breakers of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) and recorded 19 goals in 57 appearances. Hucles returned to the Breakers in 2009 for the first season of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), while spending two more seasons with the Boston Renegades of the USL W-League in 2005-06.

“It’s an exciting time for women’s soccer,” said Hucles. “The game is advancing rapidly and the opportunity to help the USL achieve its goal of providing more opportunity for athletes at all levels is very special and very fulfilling. It’s an organization that has been a consistent part of my life: First as a player, then a coach, and now as an advisor. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.”

Since her retirement from the playing field, Hucles has served as a Trustee for the U.S. Soccer Federation Board, was a U.S. Soccer Athlete Council Vice-Chair, and served a term as President of the Women’s Sports Foundation, an organization founded by tennis great Billie Jean King. She currently sits on the Women’s Sports Foundation Board and the Board of Visitors at the University of Virginia.

In addition to her work within the game, Hucles has also forged a path in the business world as an entrepreneur and businesswoman, founding multiple businesses with a focus on helping athletes’ transition from playing to their professional off-the-field career. Hucles has also worked in the sports and entertainment industry, recently working as a color commentator for national NWSL broadcasts on ESPN, while also developing reality television, educational programs and curriculum development consulting for sports clubs and organizations.

Hucles is co-founder of Ceres Platinum Group, a career, financial and life-management service company dedicated to providing resources and guidance to female athletes and executives. She also in 2012 founded the Leadership Series, a conference event focused on discovering sports leadership and life skills for young female athletes.
