Fury FC, LouCity end all square in battle of playoff contenders

Louisville City FC rallied to earn a point on the road against Ottawa Fury FC in Sunday’s action in the USL Championship at TD Place.

OTTAWA FURY FC (1), LOUISVILLE CITY FC (1)

OTTAWA – Fury FC and LouCity shared a point apiece in an entertaining contest before a crowd of 5,770 fans at TD Place. The game opened evenly as Ottawa had the first threatening moment in the 15 minute when a skipping shot by Kevin Oliveira was palmed wide of the left post by Louisville goalkeeper Chris Hubbard. The hosts had another opportunity from the ensuing corner as Hubbard scrambled to turn wide a low shot by Dakota Barnathan from the left side of the penalty area, but in the 21st minute LouCity had the best scoring chance of the half as Magnus Rasmussen got in behind the Fury FC defense and lifted a finish past Ottawa goalkeeper Callum Irving, only for defender Thomas Meilleur-Giguere to head the ball behind for a corner before it could find the net. Oliveira had another effort tipped over the crossbar by Hubbard in the 34th minute, and the hosts went close again three minutes into the second half as Christiano Francois was cleverly played in by Wal Fall only to be denied by a good save from Hubbard. Fury FC took the lead in the 56th minute, however, when Carl Haworth was brought down in the Louisville penalty area and Fall shot into the right corner from the spot. LouCity hit back in the 67th minute on a good piece of fortune as an optimistic long-range effort by Speedy Williams deflected off a defender and into the path of Rasmussen, who was clinical with his finish from 16 yards to the bottom-right corner. Louisville then almost took the lead four minutes later as Luke Spencer set up George Davis IV for a first-time shot that was thwarted by Irving, but neither side produced a decisive finish in the closing stages as honors ended even.
