Goals in either half propel Tucson past Lansing

FC Tucson counter attack proved productive as the club won its first game since the opening weekend of the season.

FC TUCSON (2) VS LANSING IGNITE FC (0)

TUCSON, Ariz. - FC Tucson earned its first clean sheet of the season Tuesday night, defeating Lansing Ignite FC 2-0 at Kino Sports Complex. Devyn Jambga opened the scoring midway through the first half, pouncing on a loose ball inside the penalty area and hammering it home. Following the opening goal, Lansing dominated possession but struggled to create in the attacking third. As the Lansing attack sputtered, Tucson’s counter-attack sprang to life and provided clean looks at goal for its front three. In the 60th minute Andrew Wheeler Omiunu played a long ball over the top from deep in midfield towards Joey Calistri. The winger collected the pass, recognized a numbers up situation, and drove at the retreating defenders, forcing Lansing’s Brandon Fricke to bring him down just outside the penalty area. Devin Vega confidently stepped up to the free kick, curling it around the wall to score his second goal of the season and double Tucson’s advantage. Despite winning 66% of possession, Lansing lacked the finishing touch necessary to beat Tucson goalkeeper Philip Ejimadu. The visitors attempted 28 crosses and 14 shots, but were shut out for the second consecutive match.
