San Antonio sees off Tacoma with early surge; New Mexico battles Portland to thrilling 3-3 tie

San Antonio FC used three first-half goals – including a brace from Jack Barmby – to shut out the Tacoma Defiance for its third victory in four games on Friday night, while in-state rival Austin Bold FC held off Real Monarchs SLC to extend its perfect home start despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.

Elsewhere, Kevaughn Frater scored a 93rd-minute equalizer to cap off his hat trick as New Mexico United fought back for a 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers 2 in front of a club-record crowd of 12,921 fans at Isotopes Park.

Fresno FC (2) vs Orange County SC (2)

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno battled back from a two-goal deficit to keep its unbeaten start alive with a draw at home against Orange County. Jerry van Ewijk got the visitors on the board first in the fourth minute with a left-wing free kick that floated through traffic and never got a touch on its way past Fresno goalkeeper CJ Cochran. Orange County doubled its advantage eight minutes later Harry Forrester blasted a right-footed effort from the left side of the penalty area into the top-right corner. Fresno started to ask some questions of its opponent in the second half as Christian Chaney tested OCSC goalkeeper Aaron Cervantes with a left-footed shot in the 51st minute before finally beating him with a close-range header with 11 minutes remaining. The home side wasn’t going to be denied a point though, as Juan Pablo Caffa produced a trademark free kick that curled around the wall and into the top-left corner and caught Cervantes cheating a little bit to his left. Seth Moses was sent off for Fresno for a second yellow card in the 92nd minute, but it was too late for Orange County to muster a quality attempt at goal as the two California sides shared the spoils.

Harry Forrester, Orange County SC – Forrester attempted five shots and scored Orange County’s second goal to help the side earn its second road point of the season.

New Mexico United (3) vs Portland Timbers 2 (3)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Kevaugn Frater capped off his hat trick with a 93rd-minute equalizer to rescue a point for New Mexico against Portland. New Mexico started the brighter of the two sides as Chris Wehan fired a warning shot on Jake Leeker’s goal inside of two minutes and Kenny Akamatsu forced a low save out of the T2 goalkeeper six minutes later. Eryk Williamson came close to opening the scoring for the visitors in the 19th minute but his long-range free kick flew just wide of Cody Mizell’s right-hand post. The home side finally took the lead five minutes after the halftime break as Frater let Santi Moar’s headed pass bounce before firing a volley through Leeker’s legs from close range. Frater added a second from the penalty spot just four minutes later, beating Leeker to his right after Max Ornstil was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Santi Moar could have put New Mexico out of sight in the 55th minute, but Leeker’s save from close range spurred on the Portland fightback. Williamson finally found a way past Mizell with a header from Marco Farfan’s corner kick in the 66th minute and substitute Ryan Sierakowski fired a deflected effort into the bottom-right corner with his first touch of the match to tie the contest two minutes later. Portland took the lead with 13 minutes to play as Williamson sent Mizell the wrong way from the penalty spot and it looked like that was going to be the winner after Leeker pushed Justin Schmidt’s header over the crossbar in the 93rd minute. But there was one last twist in the tale as Frater fired an unstoppable left-footed volley into the roof of the net in the game’s dying seconds after a goalmouth scramble to send the home crowd into delirium and rescue a point for his side.

Austin Bold FC (3) vs Real Monarchs SLC (2)

AUSTIN, Texas – Ten-men Bold FC held on late to continue its unbeaten start at home against the Monarchs. Austin got off to the perfect start by capitalizing on a fourth-minute free kick that saw Isaac Promise latch onto Sonny Guadarrama’s cross and test Monarchs goalkeeper Alex Horwath with a shot, before Sean McFarlane pounced on the rebound to give his side an early lead. Bold FC doubled its advantage seven minutes later as André Lima took advantage of a poor defensive clearance and steered the ball past Horwath with the outside of his right boot. Tate Schmitt cut the Monarchs’ deficit in half with a left-footed volley in the 19th minute, but Lima restored Austin’s two-goal lead three minutes before halftime with a first-time finish from Guadarrama’s layoff. However, the Monarchs took some momentum into halftime after Valerii Saramutin was shown a straight red card for a high sliding challenge on Jack Blake in first-half stoppage time. The visitors made their man advantage count in the 54th minute as Douglas Martinez swept home Andrew Brody’s cutback from the byline at the second attempt to cut the deficit to one but couldn’t find an equalizer late on as Bold FC held on for all three points.

San Antonio FC (3) vs Tacoma Defiance (0)

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC held on for a comfortable victory over the Defiance despite playing the final half hour with 10 men. The home side got things started just nine minutes into the contest as Brian Gomez blocked a clearance attempt from Defiance defender Aleks Berkolds into the path of Bradford Jamieson, who placed a left-footed shot past Trey Muse into the bottom-left corner. San Antonio doubled its advantage 10 minutes later as Jack Barmby took a cutback from Moisés Hernández, created a yard of space and fired a left-footed drive past Muse from the top of the penalty area. Barmby grabbed SAFC’s third goal in the 24th minute, playing a quick give-and-go with Gomez just outside the box before bending an unstoppable strike into the top-left corner. The home side nearly grabbed a fourth before the break as Walter Restrepo danced around a pair of Defiance defenders but could only fire his shot straight at Muse. San Antonio went down to 10 men just before the hour mark as Pascal Eboussi was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Tacoma left back Connor Draught, but the Defiance failed to take advantage down the stretch as the visitors did not score for a fourth straight contest.
