USL Work Experience Program (UWEP)

OVERVIEW OF THE UNITED SOCCER LEAGUE (USL)

Based in Tampa, Florida, the United Soccer Leagues, LLC, completes the vertical pipeline from youth soccer to the professional level by operating the United Soccer League – one of the most successful professional soccer leagues in the world – USL League One, USL League Two and the Super Y League (SYL). More than 45 professional teams across North America are set to take part in the USL Championship and USL League One in 2019, while USL League Two will continue to be the developmental leader in North American soccer's evolving tiered structure with more than 75 teams set to take part in 2019. The Super Y League, meanwhile, focuses on the important development ages of 10-18 for both boys and girls, providing approximately 600 teams and 10,500 players across the United States with an unparalleled experience.

The USL provides unparalleled club support to all properties with a growing team of more than 50 professionals across 17 departments in vital business areas, including: broadcasting, sponsorship, communications, competition, league operations, merchandise licensing, team services and more.

The USL has a national media partnership with ESPN, wherein all league matches are broadcast on ESPN+, ESPN3 and across linear channels. The league also operates USL Productions, which includes a state-of-the-art facility that produces and distributes more than 500 league matches and more than 1,000 hours of original content to national partners, local affiliates and international markets throughout the 2018 season.

Program Purpose

Under the direction and guidance of USL Executives, the USL Work Experience Program (UWEP) provides students with the unique opportunity to gain practical sport management experience in a professional sports league setting.  By working on various strategic projects and initiatives, UWEP participants will gain hands on experience with league staff as well as its member teams.  Participants are tasked and responsible for working with all league departments across the entire organization, including finance, sponsorships, broadcasting, business development, digital, marketing, team services, analytics, and legal, with the ultimate goal of providing well-rounded practical work experience in sports.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Working directly with department directors and league staff in the following areas:

  • Legal
  • Ticketing
  • Business Development
  • Events
  • Strategy
  • Sponsorship
  • Marketing
  • Social Media
  • Competition
  • Security & Operations

The participant will be required to bring sound business judgment and analytical mindset to a number of league initiatives and projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Department directors and league staff are looking for students with the following qualities:

  • Student must possess strong academic credentials
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic are a must. Must have a team-first mentality.
  • Should be extremely organized and detail oriented with a focus on quality and consistency.
  • Solid analytic skills along with strong people skills, computer skills, and Internet knowledge.
  • Ability to work under fluid deadlines
  • Knowledge of sports/soccer is preferred but not required
