PHOENIX, AZ -- The Seattle Sounders battled a determined Arizona Sahuaros side to a 1-0 victory in extra time to advance to the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
An unassisted goal from Kenji Treschuk off a missed clearance in the 118th minute gave Seattle the 1-0 win. Seattle will face Hollywood United, who beat the Portland Timbers 3-2, Tuesday night, at the Starfire Sports Complex on June 24.
Fighting off 105 degree heat at game-time, the Sounders found it hard to break down a Sahuaros side ready to show they belonged with the USL-1 champions.
Arizona sat back and waited for counter-attack opportunities for much of the match and nearly scored from a Chris Brown bomb from the half line in the 57th minute and a Kris Sumter breakaway with four minutes left in extra time. Both shots just missed the goal.
But it was Treschuk, coming off a one game suspension he served for a red card foul against Miami FC, who got the winner for the Sounders in the game's dying minutes.
Seattle will play Hollywood United on June 24 at Starfire, tickets are $13 in advance.
