MIAMI, FL -- Miami FC advanced to the next round in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a convincing 4-2 win over Bradenton Academics. Goals from Sean Cameron, Leo Inácio Nunes, and a brace from Alex Afonso sealed the victory after being down a man for 20 minutes of the match. The Academics took the lead with Zak Boggs and an own goal from Miami’s Eddie Gutierrez put them ahead early in the second half.
Miami FC held their first ever home game playing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Tropical Park Stadium. The Blues battled the Bradenton Academics of the PDL. The Academics came off a 3-0 win against the PDL's Central Florida Craze. The Blues came into this after four consecutive shutouts in the USL Division 1 league.
Miami, who had not tasted victory in their home turf in this 2008 campaign, were off to a nervous start but did pressure early against their well-organized and feisty Bradenton opposition. Sean Cameron volleyed over Ryan Thompson’s goal off a venomous Walter Ramirez free kick and Afonso unleashed a cracker that Thompson parried.
It wasn’t until the 18th minute when Miami were dealt a heavy blow. Christian Ibeagha rushed down the right and found Zak Boggs who easily slotted home leaving keeper Josh Saunders little to do. The Academics almost made it two after Eugen Starikov effort hit the post in the 23rd minute.
Miami sprung to life in the 25th minute when Sean Cameron devised a brilliant solo effort and fired a low left-footed strike that found the back of the net.
Sean Fraser squandered a glorious effort after being fed beautifully by Leo Inácio shortly after the break.
Matters became more complicated for Miami in the 49th minute when Eddie Gutierrez scored an own goal in an attempt to clear the ball.
Bradenton held on well but in the end their inexperience did them in. Leo Inácio curled in a beauty of a free kick in the 58th minute, sending the home crowd in a frenzy.
After the equalizer it was all Miami, even after Cristiano Dias’ 69th minute sending off. Ten minutes before the ejection Sean Cameron sprayed a cross in the box which found Afonso, and like he did so many times this season, headed home for the 3-2 lead in close to the hour mark.
Bradenton tried to recover themselves but couldn’t break down Zinho’s men despite the man advantage. Afonso put the game beyond reach with a fantastic one-touch blast from Eddie Gutierrez cross.
Miami records their first home win of the season and advances to the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
