Five USL clubs advance as they go 5-2-1 against MLS opposition

TAMPA, FL – After relatively a relatively quiet beginning in the first two rounds in terms of upsets, the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup saw plenty of noise as five lower division clubs advanced to the Quarterfinals with victories over Major League Soccer opponents, including two from the USL Second Division.

Overall, USL clubs went 5-2-1 for the round against America’s top flight, marking the first time in U.S. Open Cup history that the majority of the teams in the Quarterfinals are from USL. In addition, the matchups for the Quarterfinals ensures that a USL club will advance to the Semifinals for the seventh time since MLS began in 1996.

Sounders top Chivas USA 3-1 to move on in US Open Cup
After falling behind 1-0, the Sounders scored three unanswered to stun Chivas USA in the final US Open Cup match of the Third Round, becoming the fifth USL team to down MLS opposition to reach the Quarterfinals. Roger Levesque set up two Sebastian Le Toux goals before capping the night with one himself in the most decisive victory for a USL team for the round.

2 Advance From USL-2

Kickers knock LA out of Open Cup 1-0
Imminent storms in the area cleared just in time for a crowd of 4,578 to witness the USL-2 Richmond Kickers upset the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer in the Third Round of the US Open Cup on a hazy, humid evening in Richmond just days before the arrival of David Beckham.

Harrisburg stuns DC United 1-0
The Harrisburg City Islanders knocked Major League Soccer’s DC United out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 1-0 decision, becoming the second USL Second Division team in USL to move onto the Quarterfinals of the tournament.

Battery down defending MLS champs
The Charleston Battery topped the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in extra time in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Battery’s Stephen Armstrong netted a rebound of his 108th minute penalty to push the Battery through to the quarterfinals against FC Dallas.

Carolina knocks out defending Open Cup champs
The Carolina RailHawks continued their quest for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on as they hosted Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, the defending tournament champions, and came away with a 1-0 victory to move onto the Quarterfinals.

Atlanta falls in Dallas in penalties 4-3 after draw
FC Dallas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, prevailing over the USL First Division Atlanta Silverbacks 4-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw through extra time at Pizza Hut Park.

Rhinos rally from two down, but fall short
Trailing 2-0, Rochester Raging Rhinos forward Hamed Diallo scored twice to level the score with just minutes remaining, but it was not enough as the Rhinos fell to the New England Revolution 4-2 in US Open Cup Third Round action on two late stoppage time goals from Taylor Twellman and Steve Ralston.
