In 2006 (his third year as a pro), Kern posted career highs games played and starts (15, fourth among USL-2 keepers), minutes played (1350, fourth), and saves (51, seventh). He was also tied for third with six wins. The 26-year-old started the club’s final 12 games, posting 45 saves over that stretch. He was named to the USL-2 Team of the Week on July 17 (Week 13).
In 2005, Kern went undefeated in the regular season (10-0-1) and ended the summer with a personal 15-game unbeaten streak intact (beginning May 22, 2004; it was snapped in the club’s first game of 2006). He finished third in the league in wins, fifth in goals against average (0.98) and goalkeeper minutes played (1,010), and tied for second with a team record five shutouts. Kern was also in goal for both of
Harrisburg ’s playoff games against the
Charlotte Eagles, including a seven-save shutout on August 18.
As a rookie in 2004, Kern posted a 1.38 goals against average and led the team in wins (five) and saves (41). He started and won the first game in team history on April 17 in
Northern Virginia .
Kern enjoyed a fine career at College Misericordia before graduating in 2002, snagging All-PAC honors in 2000 (First Team), 2001 (Second Team), and 2002 (First Team). In 2000, he posted a 0.75 goals against average, helping Misericordia to the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He was the team’s MVP in 2001 and 2002.
