| 2004: Kern was one of several City Islanders to post a solid rookie season in 2004, playing an important role in the expansion team’s playoff run. The 23-year-old started (and won) the first game in team history, making one save in a 5-2 win at Northern Virginia on April 17. He was also in net for the club’s historic home opener and made a season-best eight saves in a 1-0 shutout of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. The native of Glenolden, PA, finished 5-2-2 with a 1.38 goals against average in 2004, and led the team in wins, minutes (850), games and starts (nine), and saves (41).

Profile: Kern earned a free agent contract with the Islanders on April 15, 2004, after several sound preseason performances. The 6-0, 190-pound netminder enjoyed a fine career at Misericordia before graduating in 2002, snagging All-PAC honors in 2000 (First Team), 2001 (Second Team), and 2002 (First Team). In 2000, he posted a 0.75 goals against average, helping Misericordia to the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Kern was named the Cougars’ Most Valuable Player in 2001 and 2002. |
