TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the Premier Development League Team of the Week honoring Panama City's Melford James as Player of the Week after his two shutouts on back-to-back nights at Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
James' first shutout came last Friday, when he made five saves to keep the Baton Rouge Capitals off the board in a 1-0 win. The next day the Montevallo College alumnus made 10 saves, helping his club to a 0-0 draw with the New Orleans Jesters. Panama City sit five points behind New Orleans with two games in hand as they chase their first playoff berth in clubtory.
Rio Grande Valley striker Salvador Luna returns for the second straight week after recording four goals and an assist over two matches for the Bravos this past weekend. On Saturday night, Luna setup Reynol Fuentes for what would be the game winning goal before tallying the third and fourth goals in a 5-1 rout of Austin. The next night Luna netted both Bravos goals in a 4-2 loss to Laredo.
"Salvador provided constant pressure and created numerous chances for his teammates," said Rio Grande Valley general manager Miguel Puente.
Luna has scored in seven straight matches and has 13 goals on the season.
Cascade defender Justin Woodward helped the Surge to back-to-back shutouts in wins against Portland and Vancouver this weekend. The Surge have not conceeded a goal in three straight matches and went undefeated in the month of June.
"Justin's been a rock in the back for us," said Surge head coach Mike Alfers. "Having played every minute of every game this season, he's been a big part of our success."
