Piranhas Fall, 2-1 to Gunners

Fredericksburg, VA - The PDL Piranhas fell 2-1 against the Fredericksburg Gunners Sunday night. The loss takes the Piranhas out of the playoff race for the 2009 season.

The Piranhas fell behind in the 3rd minute when Gunners midfielder Ikungo Omesimus gathered in a pass from forward Shaka Bangura and netted it to put Fredericksburg up 1-0. The Gunners were to slip in another goal in the 36th minute. Kendall Zinkham was able to sneak the ball past the Piranhas goalkeeper Ryan Zmuda to put the Piranhas down 2-0 at the end of the first half.

The Piranhas fought back in the second half, keeping the Gunners scoreless in the half while creating a few chances of their own. Then in the 80th minute Piranhas forward Kendall Lawson put the Piranhas back in the game when he connected with a cross from teammate Kyle Hartley to pull the Piranhas within one. The game was tense and physical in the final ten minutes. The Piranhas got some chances to tie the game up but were unable to convert.

The Gunners were cut to ten men in the 60th minute when Charles Sapong was given his second yellow card and ejected from the game.

The PDL Piranhas will play their next game on Tuesday July 14th in Fredericksburg in a rematch with the Gunners. The PDL side will return home this Wednesday July 15 at 8:15 p.m., for the Piranhas last doubleheader of the season. The PDL will host a rematch against the Virginia Legacy in a makeup game originally scheduled in May. The W-League Piranhas will take on the Richmond Kickers Destiny at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the gate.
