FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Hampton Roads Piranhas earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Fredericksburg Gunners Tuesday night at Fredericksburg Academy. The Gunners outlasted the Piranhas 2-1 on Sunday, July 12 at Foster Field to eliminate the Piranhas from post-season play.

Piranhas forward Nick Fogelsong scored in the 77th minute off an assist from Drew Hartell. Hartell was flying down the right side with Fogelsong pacing him on the left. Fogelsong then cut towards the center at 12 yards out and Hartell crossed a ball in that Fogelsong nailed into the net. The Gunners outshot the Piranhas 9-4. Hampton Roads goalkeeper Ryan Zmuda earned five saves on the night.

“This match was so much better than Sunday’s,” said head coach Jon Hall. "We deserved our three points.”

The PDL and W-League Piranhas are both in action Wednesday night, July 15 at Foster Field in their final doubleheader of the 2009 season.The W-League side will host the Richmond Kickers Destiny at 6:30 p.m. in their final home game of the season and in the final game to determine the winner of the James River Cup, an annual derby between Richmond and Hampton Roads. The W-League Piranhas overwhelmed the Destiny 5-0 on June 8 in their first of two games to decide this season’s Cup winner.

The PDL Piranhas will host the Virginia Legacy at 8:15 p.m. immediately following the women’s match in a makeup game for their rainout on May 9. The Piranhas outlasted the Legacy 2-1 on June 12 in Williamsburg.
