VICTORIA, BC - A bright win on an overcast evening, the Victoria Highlanders FC earned a 6-1 win over the visiting Yakima Reds. After finishing the first half a goal down, the Highlanders found their stride with the help of four goal hero Jordie Hughes.
1,523 Highlanders faithful braved the elements to cheer their team onto glory, as the Highlanders earn three points and move to a tally of twelve points for the season. Yakima scored on the sixteenth minute after a well placed freekick, which beat out Highlanders newcomer Jose Herrera. The tepid first half came to a close with no other goals.
Colin Miller confirmed after the match that he had a few choice words for the boys to help motivate them into the second. The second half performance was much improved, and the Highlanders came out firing on all cylinders. Jordie Hughes scored the tying goal in the 53rd minute, and followed that up ten minutes later with his second.
"I haven't done that since I was twelve," chuckled midfielder Jordie Hughes. "I would have been happy to score just one or two goals, but to score four goals is absolutely fantastic. The boys worked hard in the second half, and we knew if we put in one that the floodgates would open up, and did they ever!"
Patrick Gawrys scored his fourth goal of the season in the 71st minute, and Joey Mathot scored his first ever Highlanders goal in the 76th minute. But it didn't end there, as Hughes earned the clubs first ever hat-trick in the 89th minute, adding his team leadxzing sixth goal of the season in the 90th minute.
The Highlanders next two matches are against the Seattle Wolves. The first game is Friday July 3rd in Seattle, before returning home on Sunday July 5th to face the raucous Highlanders faithful at City Centre Stadium.
