THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – The Thunder Bay Chill Soccer Club had an opportunity to showcase their female side of the program Wednesday night in the Thunder Bay Senior Women’s final. The club, which has been a predominantly male program, initiated their female program less than two years ago and is extremely pleased with the benchmarks being set by the female players.

The Chill Reserve Girls claimed the Thunder Bay Women’s Championship at Chapples Park, defeating the Lakehead Express, 1- 0. The Reserves picked the right night to play their best game after losing to the Express in all of their regular season matchups.

It was Marissa Manzini, who found the net in the 37th minute. She was assisted on the play by a beautiful through ball from Monique Czaczkowski. The girls continued to attack in the first half as they kept most of the play in the Express’ defensive third.

The Chill Reserves almost had a two goal lead when Sabrina Felice took an almost perfect free kick from 25-yards out only to be stopped by the crossbar. However, Karissa Kajorinne followed up on the Felice strike, knocking it in with her forehead before being ruled offside by the officials.

The Express looked to pick up their game late in the second half only to find a determined defensive reserve team that would not let down.

“I am a defender with the Premier Development League team,” said Chill Reserve Head Coach Wilson Neto. “I have been in these situations many times. I wanted the girls to be able to secure the back with numbers and make sure the ball was always in front of them.”

Amanda Dool was in goal for the Chill Reserves to record the shutout.

The Reserve girls defeated the Grand Portage Velocity in the semifinal match, 2-1 to earn the final berth and gain some revenge from their indoor final loss to Velocity. The Reserve girls lost the Senior Women’s Davison I indoor final to Grand Portage Velocity back in April.
