ATLANTA, GA -- Mississippi Brilla FC needed a win to keep pace with the Bradenton Academics on Friday for the top spot in the Southeastern Division. Mississippi certainly did that as they cruised to a 5-0 win over the Atlanta Blackhawks in Alpharetta, GA, clinching a playoff berth.

Four goals for Ogunseye

Mississippi got on the board early when Debola Oguseye lobbed a David Lilly pass over the Atlanta goalkeeper in the sixth minute to put Brilla ahead. The goal proved to be the game winner, but was not the last Atlanta would see of Ogunseye.

Atlanta held Brilla from scoring again until the 43rd minute when Ogunseye broke through again. Taking the ball on the sideline, he diced through two defenders and hammered a left-footed shot to the far post to take Mississippi into halftime up 2-0.

Immediately after the interval, Ogunseye secured his hat trick. Stefan Ostergren played a ball across the top of the box and Ogunseye settled it before unleashing another far-post bomb in the 46th minute.

In the 58th minute, Ogunseye scored a fourth goal to take his season total to 12 and come within two of the league leaders.

Jason Keever finished the scoring for Brilla in the 80th minute when Jacob Lawrence’s flick put him in on goal. It was Keever’s second goal of the season.

Friday night’s win clinches a postseason berth for Brilla, their first in the three-year history.

“This has been a goal for us for three years,” said Mississippi Brilla FC General Manager Rusty Bryant. “With the team we assembled this year, we felt like anything less than the playoffs would be a huge disappointment. We are thrilled to have achieved this goal, but won’t be satisfied with just qualifying.”

Mississippi immediately travels to Nashville to take on the Metros in a Saturday night match. Afterwards, Brilla returns home to host the Central Florida Kraze on July 18 for both teams’ final regular season match.
