Highlanders Score Five on Tacoma Tide

Victoria Highlanders Press Release - www.victoriahighlandersfc.com

Monday, July 13

TACOMA, WA - The Highlanders earned a deserved five nil victory in Tacoma this afternoon, as the team looks to end the season on a high note. Officially eliminated from the PDL Northwest Division playoffs, the Highlanders players are realizing that their abilities to earn a place on next years team will also depend on their performances now.

Jordie Hughes, Paul VandenBoomen, Rory Hunter and Steve Scott all scored for the Highlanders, but top goal honours went to young 17-year-old Darren Jones. Jones scored a one time half volley after a nice pass from Patrick Gawrys. "The young lad continues to impress," stated Highlanders Assistant Coach David Dew. "There was a former Canadian international player at the game who made a point to come up to us and let us know that we have a really good player on our hands. Jones' attitude is great and he makes simple plays, it's nice to see him doing well."

The whole match wasn't dominated by the Highlanders, as the Tide had spells of pressure in both the first and second half. Seventh place points leader, Rory Agu, was brought into the fray for the Tide in the second half and had two opportunities to score, only to be denied by Highlanders Keeper Jose Herrera.

The Highlanders will be training hard this week, as they prepare for their last two games of the 2009 PDL season. On Friday July 17th, the Highlander host the league-leading and undefeated Kitsap Pumas, before welcoming the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency on Sunday July 19th.

Tickets are available at the Highlanders ticket office at #400 - 1913 Sooke Rd. or by calling (250) 590 - 8432.
