Player Bio:
Vancouver:
Franks began his professional career with Vancouver in 1997 as backup to Paul Dolan. He saw his first start in 1998 and played five games for Vancouver that season before heading to Europe. Once returning from Europe, Franks played for the Whitecaps in a June 16, 2001, exhibition game in Calgary against the Storm. In 2002, Franks trained with the Whitecaps while recovering from a broken arm that had put him out of action for a year.
National Team:
Named to the full National Team for the first time in May, 2000, Franks was Canada's backup keeper that year in seven of eight World Cup qualifying games, though he has yet to earn his first cap. In 2000, Franks was Canada first choice keeper on the 2000 Olympic Team (U-23).
Franks is Canada's all time shutout leader at the U-23 level with five clean sheets and just three goals against in seven games. He was also the starting keeper for the Canadian U-20 Team that showed well at the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championships in Malaysia. In 1997 he helped anchored Canada's gold-medal winning team at the World Francophone Games in Madagascar, stoning Cameroon in a penalty kick shootout in the gold medal final.
Overseas:
Franks signed with Dutch powerhouse PSV Eindhoven in 1998. That year in December he was loaned for the balance of the season to 2nd Division Dutch club Roosendaal. On September 27, 2000 he left PSV and signed with top Scottish club Hibernian. Hampered by a bothersome broken finger, he was released by Hibernian in June 2001.
Amateur:
A former standout with the UBC Thunderbirds where he was a CIAU All Canadian and Canada West Rookie of the Year.
