Penn Signs Portuguese Duo; Switchbacks bring Macias aboard

OKLAHOMA CITY – OKC Energy FC announced on Friday it had signed midfielder Justin Chavez for the 2018 USL season, pending league and federation approval.

A native of Oklahoma City, Chavez spent the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. He appeared in 54 matches with the Rowdies, played 3,250 minutes, added one goal and four assists. Prior to his stint with Tampa Bay, he played two seasons with the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, where he appeared appeared in 27 matches and played 1,477 minutes.

“We are delighted and excited to be able to bring a player of Justin’s experience and quality to Energy FC,” said Energy FC Head Coach Steve Cooke. “Over several years as a professional, Justin has shown both the talent and personal character traits that will make him an important addition to our roster and locker room for the 2018 season.

“Alongside his on-field performances, to be able to bring Justin ‘home’ to OKC is a huge boost in the community. As we develop our integrated player pathway, Justin is a shining example of young players in Oklahoma to see how one of their own has been able to enjoy a successful career.”

PENN ADDS PORTUGUESE DUO: Penn FC has announced the signings of Portuguese midfielders Pedro Galvão and Mauro Eustaquio, with the former FC Edmonton duo bringing extensive experience to their new club. The signings are pending league and federation approval.

Galvão joined Edmonton midway through 2016, and made 35 appearances for the club, moving him past 100 professional appearances for his career. The 28-year-old had previously played for Tourizense, Pampilhosa, Fatima, Seratense, and Gil Vicente in his home country.

Eustaquio split time between Canada and Portugal during his youth and senior careers, making appearances for both the Canadian U20 and U23 national teams. The 25-year-old competed for both Sporting Pombal and his hometown club, Nazarenos, before returning to Canada to join Ottawa Fury FC prior to the 2014 season. Eustaquio made 47 appearances for the club over three seasons before moving onto FC Edmonton last year, where he recorded one goal and one assist in 18 appearances.

MACIAS SIGNS FOR SWITCHBACKS: Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced the signing of Uriel Macias, who will enter his rookie season with the club after featuring for IUPUI collegiately. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“I'm very excited to have signed my first professional contract,” said Macias. “I'm glad to be a part of the Switchbacks organization, and I'm looking forward to helping the team strive for a championship this year.”
Macias led the Jaguars with four goals and 29 shots in his senior season and finished his collegiate career with 53 appearances while scoring 15 times and adding four assists. As a freshman, Macias received the Summit League's Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Summit League in addition to being named Summit League Freshman of the Year.

“We brought him in for training last week where he did very well,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “As he gets up to our speed of play and level, he's going to be a great and versatile player for us this year.”
