Veteran defender Lee scored twice for country at 2010 FIFA World Cup

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Independence announced on Thursday the club had signed South Korean international Jung-soo Lee, a veteran of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, for the 2018 USL season. The signing is pending league and federation approval, and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.

“I really appreciate all the support from the club,” said Lee via translator. “I am so excited about joining the new family and environment. I will do my best to keep our team's success and hopefully give some inspiration for our Charlotte soccer community as well.”

Lee made 54 appearances for South Korea between 2008 and 2013, including appearing in all four games the country played at the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa as the side reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Uruguay. Lee scored in South Korea’s group-stage games against both Nigeria and Greece to help South Korea finish as runner-up in Group B to Argentina.

“He's a guy who has a lot of national team experience for South Korea, and experience in the World Cup,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “For our guys to have the opportunity to be around that level and to learn from him is a big plus.”

In addition to his international career, the 38-year-old has also played in the top flight in his native country, Japan and Qatar, playing for such clubs as the K-League’s Suwon Samsung Bluewings, J-League’s Kashima Antlers and Qatar Stars League’s Al-Sadd.
