FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno FC announced on Tuesday it had acquired 2016 USL All-League First Team selection Danny Barrera, with the midfield playmaker moving on a transfer from Sacramento Republic FC after three seasons in California’s capital. Terms of the deal were not disclosed per club policy.

Barrera has recorded 16 assists over the past three seasons in Sacramento, placing him as Republic FC’s all-time leader in the category. The 28-year-old native of Bogota, Colombia had a career season in 2016 with 10 assists, earning All-League honors, as he helped Sacramento finish top of the Western Conference standings.

“Danny is one of the most exciting players in the league,” said Foxes Head Coach Adam Smith. “He is a player of MLS caliber and will be somebody that will be able to unlock games and create something magical.”

A former PDL standout with the Ventura County Fusion, Barrera made 77 appearances all-time for Republic FC, including 62 appearances in the USL. Last season Barrera made 16 appearances, all starts, scoring a goal and recording four assists before undergoing a season-ending foot surgery in July.

“He’s a player that has matured a lot over recent years and is somebody that I’m looking for great leadership from, both on and off the field,” Smith said.

Barrera is the fourth player to make the move to Fresno this offseason from Republic FC, where Smith was previously an assistant coach. Barrera joins Christian Chaney, Agustin Cazarez and Lamin Suma in joining the Foxes ahead of the club’s inaugural season in the USL this spring.
