FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno FC announced on Thursday the addition of three local standouts from the Fresno Fuego, including 2012 USL Rookie of the Year Jose Cuevas, who returns to the league for the new season. Cuevas is joined by goalkeeper Agustin Rey and forward Renato Bustamante, with all three players having helped the Fuego reach the PDL Western Conference Final in 2017.

“We’re excited to have signed on more local talent from the Fresno Fuego in Agustin Rey, Chiva Cuevas and Renato Bustamante,” said Fresno FC head coach Adam Smith. “The three of them each played valuable roles in the success of the Fuego and we’re hoping that can continue at the USL level with Fresno FC. Chiva has excelled in this league before, and I know he, Augie and Renato, will put their hearts on the line for this city and club,”

Cuevas has made 96 appearances in the USL in his career, and in 2012 claimed the USL Rookie of the Year award as a member of the Charleston Battery. That season Cuevas also earned 2012 USL Cup Most Valuable Player honors as he provided the assists on the game-winning goal in the Battery’s 1-0 victory against Wilmington Hammerheads FC for the club’s most recent championship.

This past season Cuevas recorded 11 goals and six assists for the Fuego, earning 2017 PDL All-Western Conference honors. He was supported in attack by Bustamante, who notched eight goals and a team-leading seven assists for the Fuego, while Rey made 14 appearances in goal as the Fuego made a run in the postseason before falling to FC Golden State Force in the conference Final.

“We’re delighted to continue building our inaugural roster with more players from the Fresno Fuego,” said general manager Frank Yallop. “The addition of Augie, Renato and Jose is a testament to the level of young, rising talent in the Valley. They’ve seen how the fans embrace players when the play with heart, and will only help to elevate that culture at Fresno FC.”
