PHOENIX – Phoenix Rising FC announced on Monday it had signed defender Joe Farrell for the 2018 USL season. A former selection to the USL All-League Team, and a finalist for the league’s Rookie of the Year award in 2016, Farrell arrives after spending his first two professional seasons with the Rochester Rhinos.

“To me, Phoenix Rising is without a doubt one of the most exciting clubs in the USL and as a free agent PRFC checked all the right boxes,” Farrell said. “First and foremost, a quality team and organization that are pushing hard for the USL Cup. Second, access to awesome training facilities as well as a beautiful home pitch. Last but certainly not least, great fan support in a great city! I can’t wait to get to Phoenix.”

Farrell has made 64 appearances in his first two professional seasons in the USL, and this past year helped the Rhinos record the best defensive record in the Eastern Conference. Farrell recorded 109 clearances and 73 interceptions defensively, and scored a pair of goals as the Rhinos reached the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs.

A former member of the New York Red Bulls U-23 in the PDL, with which he reached the 2015 PDL Championship Game after scoring the game-winning goal in the side’s national semifinal, Farrell also featured for La Salle collegiately before signing with the Rhinos prior to the 2016 USL season.
