SANDY, Utah – Taylor Peay became the third player to make the move from Real Monarchs SLC to Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake this year on Friday as he signed with RSL for the 2018 season. A local standout growing up, Peay’s MLS rights were acquired by RSL from the Portland Timbers for a third-round selection in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft in January.

The 26-year-old defender made 21 appearances for the Monarchs as the club claimed the 2017 USL Regular Season Championship, scoring two goals and one assist. Defensively, Peay recorded 86 clearances and 31 interceptions, while winning 22 of 29 tackles during the season. He joins goalkeeper Connor Sparrow and Midfielder Nick Besler in joining RSL from the Monarchs.

“I’m very excited for a great opportunity like this,” Peay said. “I’m ready to get to work for the club I grew up supporting in my hometown. For my family and I, RSL is something special and I’m excited to have the opportunity to represent the club.”

A graduate of Brighton High School in Salt Lake City, Peay had a standout collegiate career for the University of Washington, where he helped the Huskies claim the Pac-12 championship in 2013. He has made 58 appearances in the USL over his career, spending time on loan with Orange County SC in the 2014 season before competing for the Portland Timbers 2 over the past two years.

In addition to seeing action for T2, Peay also made seven appearances for the Timbers in MLS, including during Portland’s 2015 MLS Cup-winning season.

“Taylor comes from a championship background with the Monarchs and Timbers,” said RSL General Manager Craig Waibel. “With that experience he has earned the opportunity with the first team to continue his growth as a player. He was an important piece to the championship season for the Monarchs and he went above and beyond in his efforts to remain connected in the community and those are important qualities for us.”
