RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers announced on Friday the club had signed defender Austin Yearwood for the 2018 USL season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Yearwood joins the Kickers after a two-year stint with fellow USL club the Charlotte Independence. A native of Charlotte, N.C., the 23-year-old made 22 appearances for the Independence in 2017, amassing 1,749 minutes and contributing to six shutouts as the club finished fifth in the USL Eastern Conference standings.

Yearwood previously played for the PDL’s Charlotte Eagles in addition to High Point University, where he was a three-time All-Big South selection. Yearwood earned First Team honors in 2015, as well as Second Team honors in 2013 and 2014. He made 77 collegiate appearances and contributed one goal and 17 assists from his outside back position. Anchoring the defensive unit in 2015 that posted eight shutouts, he helped set a High Point Division I single-season record for goals against average.

Yearwood joins 13 players currently under contract including Matt Bolduc, Heviel Cordovés, Marcel DeBellis, Raul Gonzalez, Yudai Imura, Alex Lee, Luiz Fernando, Fred Owusu Sekyere, Mallan Roberts, Conor Shanosky, Braeden Troyer, Oscar Umar, and Finnlay Wyatt.
