PHOENIX – Phoenix Rising FC announced on Tuesday it had made its first new addition of the offseason as it signed goalkeeper John Berner for the 2018 USL season. Berner was previously a member of Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and spent a brief stint on loan with Rising FC this past season.

“I'm extremely happy to sign with Phoenix," Berner said. "I was able to come down here for a month this past season and get to work with the staff and team and saw first-hand how class of an organization it was from top to bottom. Very excited we were able to work out a deal and look forward to a successful season and moving forward with this club.”

Berner had been a member of the Colorado Rapids since 2014 when he was the 35th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, and twice spent loan stints with the club’s USL partner, the Charlotte Independence. Berner has made 38 appearances in the USL in his career, and in the 2016 regular season posted eight shutouts in 21 contests, a 72.8 save percentage and a 1.10 goals-against average.
