SAFC All-Time Minutes Leader Returns for Third Season

San Antonio FC re-signed defender and SAFC all-time minutes leader Greg Cochrane for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Cochrane led the club in USL minutes (2,782) and appearances (31) in 2017 while also collecting three league assists, which were tied for second on the team.  The defender is the only SAFC player to reach 60 league games played in club history, leading the franchise in career USL minutes played with 5,413. Overall, the 27-year old has played in 96 percent (6,013 of 6,270) of the club’s all-time minutes and 97.1 percent (5,623 of 5,790) of the club’s USL minutes, including the postseason.

“We are really pleased that Greg re-signed for the third year,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He has been a model professional since arriving in San Antonio. He’s performed consistently at a high level in 2016 and 2017, and we look forward to him continuing to improve on those performances in 2018.”

The Holland, PA native was involved in 14 of 15 SAFC clean sheets during the 2017 season while playing 90 minutes in 31 of the team’s 32 regular season USL matches. Cochrane has now ranked in the top two in assists for San Antonio in both of his seasons in the Alamo City, while also ranking third with six assists all-time for the club. In addition, Cochrane was named to the USL Team of the Week twice in 2017.

In 2016, Cochrane was one of only two SAFC players who appeared in all 30 matches of the USL regular season, leading the team and ranking fifth in the USL with 2,631 minutes played. His three assists in 2016 were tied for the third-most by a defender in the USL last year.

“I’m excited to be coming back to San Antonio for my third season and play in front of our incredible fans,” said Cochrane. “We made great strides as a club from year one to year two and I am looking forward to building upon the positive momentum in year three.”

Cochrane was originally selected in the second round (38th overall) by the LA Galaxy in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The defender went on to make 12 appearances for the club in the regular season and featured in the CONCACAF Champions League as well as the U.S. Open Cup for the decorated MLS franchise. Cochrane then spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Chicago Fire (MLS), where he made 16 total appearances and recorded two assists during his time there. Cochrane also played three matches on-loan to USL side Saint Louis FC in 2015, prior to joining SAFC at the start of the 2016 season.

At the collegiate level, Cochrane spent his last two years at the University of Louisville, where he tallied six goals and recorded five assists in 44 games for the Cardinals. The Pennsylvania native spent his freshman and sophomore years at Virginia Tech, where he scored two goals and notched eight assists in 38 matches.
