RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Kickers announced on Monday the signing of Cuban forward Heviel Cordovés for the 2018 USL season, marking move to the Kickers from the club’s longtime rival the Charleston Battery. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Cordovés scored 28 goals over five seasons with the Battery, including a single-season high nine goals in the 2017 USL regular season as Charleston finished second in the Eastern Conference. A native of Havana, Cuba, Cordoves joined the Battery after defecting to the United States during a Cuban National Team trip to Toronto for a World Cup Qualifier in 2012.

Over five seasons in Charleston, Cordovés made 109 appearances in the USL regular season. Two of his nine goals in the past year came against the Kickers, as he found the net on a second-minute goal in the Kickers’ 3-1 win against the Battery at City Stadium on August 26 and an 84th-minute game-winner at MUSC Health Stadium on September 16 as the Battery took a 1-0 victory.

The 28-year-old forward joins a Kickers side that is looking for a major attacking boost in the 2018 USL season. Richmond recorded a league-fewest 24 goals in the 2017 USL regular season, which saw the club miss out on a place in the USL Cup Playoffs for the first time in the league’s modern era.

Cordovés joins 12 players currently under contract including Matt Bolduc, Marcel DeBellis, Raul Gonzalez, Yudai Imura, Alex Lee, Luiz Fernando, Fred Owusu Sekyere, Mallan Roberts, Conor Shanosky, Braeden Troyer, Oscar Umar, and Finnlay Wyatt.
