Low denial in pro debut against Monarchs finishes top in online poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 goalkeeper Mark Village’s standout stop against Real Monarchs SLC has been voted the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Month for October of the 2017 season, with the save part of a standout performance that earned WFC2 a 1-1 draw against the 2017 USL Regular Season champion.

A former standout in the PDL, Village made his professional debut for WFC2 as it visited the Monarchs at Rio Tinto Stadium in the penultimate weekend of the 2017 USL regular season. He was quickly called into action as Real winger Daniel Haber found space on the right side of the attacking third and fired a low shot toward the far post. Village got down well to save with his right hand, allowing his defense to clear the rebound comfortably.

Village's save received 78 percent of the online poll conducted at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday morning. Phoenix Rising FC’s Josh Cohen finished second on 11 percent for his full-stretch save that preserved a shutout for Phoenix in its 2-0 victory against Rio Grande Valley FC at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex, while Sacramento Republic FC’s Evan Newton took third with seven percent for his excellent double-save against Reno 1868 FC at Greater Nevada Field.
