Long-range strike that landed on SportsCenter Top 10 finishes top in poll

TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Marcel Schäfer has made a habit of notching long-range strikes over the course of his first season in the USL, and his blast against the New York Red Bulls II at Al Lang Stadium has been voted the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month for October of the 2017 season.

Schäfer finished tied for the most goals from outside the penalty area in the USL regular season, with the last of the four another classic strike from the former German international. After receiving the ball in midfield, Schäfer drove into the left channel of the attacking third and as the defense backed off to provide pace he drove his finish into the top-left corner of the net. Schäfer’s goal was ranked the No. 4 finish on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 later that night, his second appearance on the countdown this year.

Schäfer 's strike received 71 percent of the online poll conducted at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday morning. Louisville City FC midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye finished second on seven percent for his outstanding solo effort against the Richmond Kickers at Slugger Field, while Tulsa Roughnecks FC’s Juan Pablo Caffa took third for his tremendous long-range strike against Phoenix Rising FC.
