Republic FC goalkeeper’s double save in Reno takes weekly honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC goalkeeper Evan Newton has claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 30 of the 2017 season as his standout double-save against Reno 1868 FC this past Saturday night at Greater Nevada Field finished top of the weekly online poll.

The award is Newton’s third of the season, having also claimed victory in Week 7 and Week 13. Against 1868 FC the veteran keeper showed off his reflexes as he first turned away a low, long-distance shot by Luis Felipe and then recovered in time to produce a tremendous palmed save that denied 1868 FC forward Brent Richards, whose powerful header was turned over the crossbar by Newton as the Donner Pass Derby rivals played to a 2-2 draw in the final weekend of the 2017 USL regular season.

Newton earned 55 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Portland Timbers 2 goalkeeper Wade Hamilton finished second on 41 percent for an excellent scrambling save to keep out a low free kick by Phoenix Rising FC’s Didier Drogba’s free kick toward the bottom-left corner, and Rio Grande Valley FC’s Calle Brown finished third for his point-blank save on San Antonio FC’s Cesar Elizondo.
