From an unknown to a record-holder, rookie has sparkled in 2017

When he arrived for Reno 1868 FC’s inaugural training camp, an undrafted rookie out of the University of New Mexico, it was understandable that compared to some of his more illustrious teammates there wasn’t much buzz about Chris Wehan.

Eight months later, the 23-year-old has not only established himself as one of the breakout players of the 2017 USL regular season, he has also added his name to the USL Record Book. In claiming the title of 2017 USL Assists Champion, Wehan also tied the league’s single-season record with 12 helpers to play his part in the most prolific attack in league history.

It took until the first victory in 1868 FC history against Phoenix Rising FC for Wehan to notch his first assist of the season, while later in the same contest he added a first professional goal. While Dane Kelly took the headlines for the 4-0 win at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex on May 6, things quickly started moving for Wehan as well.

The winger’s ability to combine with Kelly and fellow striker Antoine Hoppenot helped power Reno to a remarkable attacking run, with Wehan just as able to create in open play (43 chances created) as from set pieces (23 chances created). He also developed an eye for goal as well, finishing the season with eight goals, including a standout finish to help 1868 FC claim victory against Sacramento Republic FC at Papa Murphy’s Park in August.

With the consistency Wehan has shown this season, it’s unlikely Assists Champion will be the only honor that comes his way. What will be even more intriguing, though, is how he follows up a stellar start to his professional career moving into 2018.
