Tulsa Roughnecks FC looks to clinch Playoffs place

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Roughnecks FC kicks off a pair of home games to wrap up the regular season with a chance to clinch its first trip to the USL Cup Playoffs as it welcomes Seattle Sounders FC 2 to ONEOK Field on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.

Tulsa Roughnecks FC news and notes

  • Current record: 13-13-4, 43pts

  • The Roughnecks fell 4-3 to Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday night at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3, missing out on its first chance to clinch a place in the playoffs.

  • After taking a two-goal lead through goals by Joaquin Rivas and Juan Pablo Caffa in the opening 15 minutes, the Roughnecks conceded three goals in a row before Christian Thierjung made it 3-3 on the half-hour mark. Phoenix struck again in the second half as Jason Johnson scored his second goal of the game, and the Roughnecks were unable to find another equalizer to leave without a point.

  • Caffa's goal was his ninth of the season, while Joey Calistri recorded assists on all three of the team's goals against Phoenix. Both players now have nine goals and six assists apiece this season.

  • Tulsa will play both of its final two matches of the regular season at ONEOK Field with a win in either contest enough to earn a place in the USL Cup Playoffs. The Roughnecks could also clinch a place in the playoffs should Orange County SC suffer defeat to Reno 1868 FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fail to take victory against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday night.

Seattle Sounders FC 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 9-16-4, 31pts

  • S2 fell 1-0 to Phoenix Rising FC in its last contest on Sept. 20 at Starfire Stadium, a result that ended up eliminating the side from playoff contention.

  • Seattle held 58.2 percent of possession against and finished the game with 14 shots but came up against a strong goalkeeping performance from Josh Cohen in the Phoenix goal who recorded a five-save shutout to earn his side victory.

  • Saturday's game kicks off a three-game road trip to conclude the regular season for S2, which will also visit the Swope Park Rangers (Oct. 11) and OKC Energy FC (Oct. 15) during its travels.

  • The Roughnecks have won all four matches between these two sides, with the most recent coming in a 1-0 win on August 30 at Starfire Stadium that saw Francisco Ugarte score the only goal of the game.
