VANCOUVER, B.C. – Portland Timbers 2 recorded a quality 1-0 win against Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at McLeod Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon. Victor Arboleda scored the game-winning goal in the 67th minute after WFC2 goalkeeper Spencer Richey was unable to stop the chance. The goal occurred moments after Richey made an eye-opening save against Giovanni Calixtro, who had a header from close range pushed wide. Myer Bevan had the best chance to net for the home side in the first half, but T2 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh recorded a massive one-v-one save to keep things even. With the result, Portland now improves to 3-20-6 overall, while Vancouver is now 5-17-8 this regular season.

Scoring:
67’ – POR – Victor Arboleda

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Saturday’s match was the third and final meeting between the Cascadia rivals this regular season, and Portland can leave Canada with its head held high after preventing Vancouver from securing all the bragging rights in 2017. After recording 1-0 wins at Providence Park on April 16 and June 4, WFC2 was unable to sweep its rival this season, as Arboleda came up with the important goal.

  • 2. Portland has struggled for results this USL campaign, but the club’s winless run is finally over. Before Saturday, T2’s last victory occurred on July 29 against Rio Grande Valley FC, but the club looked sharper and showed well on the road against Vancouver in Week 28. McIntosh made key saves, while Russell Cicerone, Carlos Anguiano, Arboleda and Calixtro all created chances moving forward.

  • 3. While Vancouver finishes the season with a 2-1-0 record against T2, Saturday’s defeat will sting, especially considering how well the home side looked. Marco Bustos and Terran Campbell had strong outings for Vancouver, while Bevan showed bursts of energy. Credit goes to Portland’s back line and goalkeeper, though, for keeping Vancouver off the score board and for preventing more dangerous plays from happening. Bevan, alone, was called offside five times, a testament of T2’s organized defense.
