VAUGHAN, Ont. – As eclectic as Louisville City FC’s attack has been this season, it was only a matter of time before George Davis IV found his way to the front.

A three-time All-League selection in his previous stops around the USL, the former University of Kentucky standout is on a two-game scoring streak heading into Wednesday night’s game against Toronto FC II at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

“[I’ve] just been fortunate to get some good balls,” Davis said after Sunday’s game with Ottawa Fury FC. “Taking advantage of the opportunities. I’m glad that I’ve been able to get on the end of some balls again and put the ball in there.”

Davis’ goal against Ottawa was his sixth of the season, which surpassed his regular season total of a season ago, his first in Louisville. Davis likely won’t match his career season to date this year, an 11-goal season for the Richmond Kickers in 2014, but the all-around game the veteran attacking midfielder brings makes him a key figure in Louisville’s success this season.

“I think George is one of the more consistent players that we have,” said Louisville Head Coach James O’Connor. “You always know what you’re going to get from George. You take a goal when you have it and he’ll be looking to score another goal one later on as well.”

Sunday’s goal was a perfect example of the experience Davis brings to City’s attack. Isolated on the right as Louisville built an attack down the left, the 30-year-old timed his move to the top of the penalty area perfectly to leave his marker a yard behind, and Fury FC goalkeeper Callum Irving stranded as he tried to challenge the developing play. One good first touch later and Davis had a simple finish for Louisville’s Eastern Conference-leading 53rd goal of the season.

With all of the headlines being drawn by new single-season record-holder Reno 1868 FC, Louisville is on course for a club-record season in front of goal as its total of 55 goals in the club’s inaugural season comes within range. For a club that doesn’t have an individual goal-scorer in the Top 10 in the league – Luke Spencer’s 10 tallies put him tied for 11th – the variety of ways Louisville can strike has been a major plus after seeing players vie for the USL Golden Boot each of the past two seasons.

As good as that’s been for the team, the three-month spell Davis had gone without finding the net prior to last Wednesday’s game with the Rochester Rhinos was taking a little bit of a toll personally, even with the club’s success.

“Well, everybody playing wants to score goals and you go through a drought like that, it gets kind of frustrating,” said Davis, whose most recent goal prior to his tally against Rochester had come on June 3 in Louisville’s epic 4-4 draw with the Charleston Battery. “Like I said, I know that I’m capable and I knew I was going to get chances again, so I just tried to stay patient, keep believing and looking towards the next opportunity.”

With Davis finding form as the USL Cup Playoffs approach, it will make Louisville all the more dangerous as both he and the club go in pursuit of their first championship.

“I’m 100-percent in shape and feeling confident,” said Davis. “Honestly, it’s that time of year you want to be at your best, so hopefully I can stay healthy and keep that up and continue to succeed.”
