Reno looks to keep up pressure for top two finish

RENO, Nev. – After sealing its place in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night, while setting a single-season USL record in the process, Reno 1868 FC will try to maintain its hold on second place in the USL Western Conference when it plays host to the Portland Timbers 2 at Greater Nevada Field on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT.

Reno 1868 FC news and notes

  • Current record: 15-6-7, 52pts

  • Reno 1868 scored its 63rd goal of the season and set a new USL single-season record for goals scored during a 3-0 win against OKC Energy FC on Wednesday night in front of 6,001 fans at Greater Nevada Field.

  • Lindo Mfeka scored the third hat trick in club history to give Reno victory against Energy FC, while Chris Wehan recorded his 10th assist of the season to become the first player to reach that mark this season.

  • The victory moved 1868 FC into second place in the USL Western Conference going into this weekend's action, with the side leading San Antonio FC on the first tiebreaker of total wins.

  • Reno currently holds a 12-game home undefeated streak at Greater Nevada Field, with its only loss on home turf in its inaugural season coming on the opening night of the season.

Portland Timbers 2 news and notes

  • Current record: 2-18-6, 12pts

  • T2 returns to action for the first time since Sept. 9, when it earned a 0-0 draw against Western Conference-leader Real Monarchs SLC at Providence Park. 

  • Portland held a 17-8 edge in shots against the Monarchs in that contest, but was unable to find a way past Real goalkeeper Connor Sparrow to earn what would have been the side's biggest win of the season. 

  • Portland has drawn three successive games, but remains well adrift of the rest of the Western Conference as it enters the final stretch of the season. 

  • Midfielder Omar Mohamed leads T2 with 23 key passes this season, but has only earned two assists in 21 appearances.
