Louisville and Rochester battle in top four clash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After clinching its place in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs over the weekend, Louisville City FC can move within two points of Real Monarchs SLC in the race for the USL Regular Season Championship, but will need to keep its form up as the fourth-place Rochester Rhinos visit Slugger Field on Wednesday night for one of two big Eastern Conference contests in the midweek slate of games. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Louisville City FC news and notes

  • Current record: 15-5-6, 51pts

  • Following results on Saturday night, Louisville City FC became the first team in the USL Eastern Conference to clinch a place in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs.

  • Louisville rallied twice on Friday night to take a 2-2 draw with Bethlehem Steel FC in front of a crowd of 8,303 fans at Slugger Field on Friday night.

  • Both of City's wing backs found the net in the contest, as a penalty kick by Kyle Smith early in the second half and a low free kick by Oscar Jimanez earned Louisville a point after Steel FC had twice taken the lead.

  • Louisville is one of just eight teams in USL with a shooting accuracy above 50 percent this season, with the side sitting at a 50.15 percent accuracy rate. City is currently second in the USL Eastern Conference with 50 goals, only two fewer than its total in the 2017 USL regular season.

Rochester Rhinos news and notes

  • Current record: 11-5-10, 44pts

  • The Rhinos rallied late to earn a 1-1 draw with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium to continue the club's four-game undefeated streak.

  • Center back Joe Farrell scored the 90th-minute equalizer, putting away an assist from Christiano Francois to get the Rhinos a vital point as it remained in the top four in the USL Eastern Conference.

  • The Rhinos continue to hold the best defensive record in the Eastern Conference, having conceded only 24 goals this season. Only Louisville (81) has allowed fewer shots on goal this season than Rochester (86) as the two best defensive sides in the conference square off on Wednesday night

  • The all-time series between the two sides is tied at 1-1-2, with this the first meeting of the 2017 regular season. The teams will meet again at Capelli Sport Stadium in Rochester on Sept. 30.
