Bilyeu scores the game-winner in Toros' 1-0 victory

EDINBURG, Texas – Reno 1868 FC will have to wait another day to clinch its spot in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs, as Rio Grande Valley FC recorded an important 1-0 victory against the Western Conference contender at H-E-B Park on Saturday evening. The Toros took the lead in the 32nd minute, as Justin Bilyeu converted a penalty after Kyle Murphy was taken down in the box by Reno goalkeeper Matt Bersano. The Toros are now 8-13-7 overall this season, while 1868 FC falls to 14-6-7.

Scoring:
32’ – RGV – Justin Bilyeu

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Saturday’s result was an impressive one for the Toros, for multiple reasons. Most importantly, the result helps keep the club’s slim hopes of earning a spot to the USL Cup Playoffs alive. However, the club was also able to accomplish something only a handful of other clubs have done all season, as the Toros held Reno scoreless for just the fifth time this campaign. The team will be hoping for more of the same in its final four games of the regular season.

  • 2. Reno entered Saturday’s road match needing a win to clinch a spot in the USL Cup Playoffs, but the side was unable to pull out the result at H-E-B Park, where the Toros are now 5-5-5 this season. The good news for 1868 FC is that it will play four of its final five regular-season matches at home, where the club is 7-1-4 thus far.

  • 3. The bad news for 1868 FC is that Dane Kelly was shown a red card late in the second half and is set to miss the club’s next home match against OKC Energy FC on Wednesday. Reno has done well when Kelly has been unable to suit up, but the team will surely miss one of the league’s best scorers.
