Black Gold Derby sees Energy FC in need of victory against Tulsa

OKLAHOMA CITY – OKC Energy FC plays host to Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Sunday evening at Taft Stadium in the final edition of the 2017 Black Gold Derby with Energy FC in need of a victory to boost its playoff hopes as it welcomes its in-state rivals, who sit comfortably fifth in the Western Conference standings. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. CT.

OKC Energy FC news and notes

  • Current record: 9-10-7, 34pts

  • Energy FC is coming off a 0-0 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 last Sunday evening at Taft Stadium that saw WFC2 earn a point thanks to a seven-save shutout by goalkeeper Sean Melvin.

  • The result left Energy FC sitting in ninth place in the USL Western Conference going into this weekend’s action, trailing eighth-place Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on goal differential.

  • Energy FC is undefeated in its last five games at Taft Stadium (3-0-2) but has been held to scoreless draws in each of its past two outings by San Antonio FC and WFC2.

  • Sunday’s game kicks off a crucial week for OKC, which will visit third-place Reno 1868 FC on Wednesday night and then sixth-place Sacramento Republic FC next Saturday as it pushes for a third consecutive playoff berth.

Tulsa Roughnecks FC news and notes

  • Current record: 12-10-4, 40pts

  • The Roughnecks extended their undefeated streak to three games with a 3-1 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in their last outing on Sept. 6 at MacLeod Athletic Park.

  • The victory capped a road trip through the Pacific Northwest that saw the side go 2-0-1 and move into fifth place in the USL Western Conference with six games to go in the regular season.

  • Roughnecks defender Jorge Corrales signed with the Chicago Fire on Thursday, the first such move since the two clubs partnered prior to this season. Corrales will remain on loan with Tulsa for the rest of this season.

  • Tulsa forward Ian Svantesson scored his 11th goal of the season against Vancouver, and is now tied for the club’s single-season record that was held by current Sacramento Republic FC forward Sammy Ochoa.

  • The Roughnecks claimed the Black Gold Derby series for the first time this season with victories in each of the opening two games, cutting Energy FC’s lead in the all-time series to 5-3-2.
