Rodriguez nets last-second goal to hand Republic FC 2-1 road win

EDINBURG, Texas – After falling behind, Sacramento Republic scored two, including a goal deep in stoppage time, to record a 2-1 win against Rio Grande Valley FC at H-E-B Park on Saturday evening. The Toros’ Kyle Murphy netted the opening goal of the game in the 69th minute, pouncing on an opportunity in the box. Sacramento responded quickly, however, as Tyler Blackwood fed Bijev, who hit a sensational right-footed effort by Toros goalkeeper Borja Angoitia. In the 96th minute, Carlos Rodriguez headed in a corner kick from James Kiffe to secure the important victory. With the result, Sacramento moves to 11-8-6 on the year, while the Toros are now 7-13-7 this campaign.

Scoring:
69’ – RGV – Kyle Murphy
72’ – SAC – Villyan Bijev (Tyler Blackwood)
90+6’ – SAC – Carlos Rodriguez (James Kiffe)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Carlos Rodriguez’s last-second winner for Sacramento was important for many reasons. Not only did the goal give Republic FC all three points on Saturday, but it also put an end the to the team’s winless streak and put the club in better position to qualify for a Western Conference playoff spot.
  • 2. Even though the club left it late, Sacramento performed well throughout the match in a tough environment. The Toros have enjoyed their home this season, securing a 4-4-5 record at H-E-B Park before tonight’s match, but Republic FC earned its fifth road win to put itself in good position to clinch a spot in the USL Cup Playoffs.
  • 3. The Toros have hit a slump in the past few weeks and can’t seem to snap out of it. Now winless in six consecutive games, the club has five matches remaining in the regular season to try and make a late push for the USL Cup Playoffs. The Toros currently have 28 points this campaign and are six back of eighth-place Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
