Switchbacks, Rising FC square off in key playoff race clash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two teams looking to stay in the USL Cup Playoff places will do battle at Weidner Field on Saturday night as Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC welcomes Phoenix Rising FC for a crucial USL Western Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC news and notes

  • Current record: 9-10-7, 34pts

  • Colorado Springs comes into this match following a thrilling comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against Sacramento Republic FC last Saturday at Papa Murphy's Park. 

  • The Switchbacks came from behind twice in the match to get the draw with equalizers coming from Luke Vercollone and Pascal Eboussi, with Eboussi scoring in stoppage time.

  • Masta Kacher was the star of the match, recording assists on both goals, creating three chances and managing to complete 85.7 percent of his passes, a strong enough performance to earn him a place on the USL Team of the Week bench.

  • The result kept Colorado Springs winless in their last three matches, and the side has gone only 2-2-1 over its last five games at Weidner Field including a 2-1 defeat to the LA Galaxy II in its last home outing.

Phoenix Rising FC news and notes

  • Current record: 9-7-6, 33pts

  • Rising FC played to a 0-0 draw with Orange County SC in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 this past Wednesday night in its last outing to remain in eighth place in the USL Western Conference.

  • Phoenix only managed two shots on target for the contest, but almost claimed victory in the final five minutes as the side hit the post twice through Gladson Awako and Jason Johnson.

  • Josh Cohen was named to the USL Team of the Week following his performance for a shutout against Seattle Sounders FC 2 this past Saturday. Cohen has recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season in Phoenix's past two games.

  • Phoenix played five of its next six games on the road, with its lone home game in that span next Saturday night against Western Conference-leader Real Monarchs SLC.
