TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer League has announced that Saturday’s scheduled contest between the Charleston Battery and Charlotte Independence has been postponed to Wednesday, Sept. 20 at MUSC Health Stadium due to the the potential arrival of Hurricane Irma in the region this weekend.
“The league and clubs both agreed that for the safety of the players and fans this decision needed to be made given the potential strength of the incoming weather system,” said USL VP of League Operations Brett Luy. “We appreciate the understanding of the fans in making this decision given the serious nature of the situation.”
The National Weather Service in Miami, Fla. issued an advisory on Thursday morning that Irma remained a potentially catastrophic Category 5 Hurricane, with the anticipation it will move up the Atlantic coast of the United States toward South Carolina over the upcoming weekend.
