LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville City FC and Charleston Battery showed why they are two of the best teams in the USL Eastern Conference as Louisville claimed a 1-0 win on Saturday night in an entertaining match at Slugger Field. The goal finally came for Louisville in the 78th minute as Guy Abend found space on the edge of the area to hit a powerful shot which appeared to take a deflection before hitting the back of the net. Both teams had opportunities to run at goal in the first half but the defense from each team was strong, keeping it scoreless at halftime. Ten minutes after half time only Alex Tambakis stopped Louisville from opening the scoring as Niall McCabe shot across the face of goal but Tambakis stretched out his foot to save it.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Charleston began the day sitting in third place and will still be in third place at the end of the day, but things could be so much better for the Battery. Losing this match extended a poor run of form for Charleston, who has now won just one of its last 10 matches.

  • 2. Louisville sat top of the Eastern Conference standings coming into the match, on the back of a strong run of big wins which ended last week. With the win against the Battery, City will remain on top, keeping pressure on the chasing Charlotte Independence.

  • 3. Throughout the match it seemed that the Louisville's pressure would tell, and it eventually did. That domination was reflected as they doubled the number of shots made by the Battery, holding a 12-6 advantage.

Alex Tambakis, Charleston Battery – Despite conceding the late goal, Alex Tambaxis was vital in goal for Charleston Battery. It could have been much worse if not for Tambakis’ hard work as he made five impressive saves in the match.
