Wynne starts, Bevan makes debut in big win against Solomon Islands

All three current and former USL players saw action as New Zealand took a 6-1 victory against the Solomon Islanders on Friday night at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand in the first leg of the final stage of Oceania Qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 defender Deklan Wynne started the contest for the All Whites, while former Swope Park Rangers midfielder James Musa and WFC2 forward Myer Bevan also appeared as a second-half substitutes. Bevan’s appearance marked his debut for New Zealand’s full national team, after having previously been a standout for the country’s U20 national team.

Burnley FC striker Chris Wood led the way for New Zealand in the victory as he notched a hat trick, while Kosta Barbarouses, Ryan Thomas and Michael McGlinchey also found the net. New Zealand will visit the Solomon Islands on Tuesday for the return leg, with the winner of the series to advance to an intercontinental playoff for a place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
