Charlotte Independence seeks top spot in match against resurgent Richmond

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence and Richmond Kickers come in Saturday night's match at the Sportsplex at Matthews with differing results from last week, although not how their respective positions in the USL Eastern Conference standings would suggest. Charlotte will be looking to bounce back from a loss while Richmond want to get a run of results going. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charlotte Independence news and notes

  • Current record: 12-5-8, 44pts

  • The Independence were stunned last Saturday as they lost at home to the side at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, Toronto FC II, falling 3-2.

  • After taking a two-goal lead through goals to Enzo Martinez and Jaime Siaj, an Alex Martinez red card let Toronto back in to the match, seeing them score three goals in seven minutes to take the result away from Charlotte.

  • Despite going down a man Charlotte had the bulk of possession (54.8 percent) but lost the aerial battle, winning only 26.7 percent of the aerial duels.

  • It was just the second lost at home for the Independence this season, and their first since moving into the Sportsplex at Matthews. While it was just the fifth win for Toronto FC II this year, and its second on the road.

Richmond Kickers news and notes

  • Current record: 5-12-8, 23pts

  • The Kickers stunned the Charleston Battery at home last Saturday, managing a 3-1 win against a team chasing the top position in the Eastern Conference.

  • After conceding early Richmond fought back with Sunny Jane managing a goal and an assist. Oliver and Yudai Imura added the other two goals.

  • Jane’s performance earned him USL Team of the Week honors as he starred in the match with Braeden Troyer being named to the bench.

  • The result marked the start of the first winning streak for Richmond for the season following on from its victory against Toronto FC II one week earlier.

  • The Independence lead the all-time series between the two sides 4-2-3, and have not lost to Richmond since June 7 2015.
