Charleston Battery seek to close gap at the top in Richmond trip

RICHMOND, Va. – Sitting in third place in the USL Eastern Conference, the Charleston Battery head to take on the Richmond Kickers knowing three points keeps them in touch with the top. Richmond will be looking to get on a winning streak for the first time in the match at City Stadium which kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night.

Richmond Kickers news and notes

  • Current record: 4-12-8, 20pts

  • The Kickers come into this match after getting their fourth win of the season, lifting off the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win against Toronto FC II.

  • The Kickers came from behind in the win thanks to goals from Sunny Jane and Matthew Bolduc, giving the fans at City Stadium something to cheer about.

  • Starring in the match was Alex Lee, who earned himself a place on the USL Team of the Week following an assist and a strong defensive performance behind which Richmond built its win.

  • Richmond has not won two consecutive matches this season but could play spoiler if they can start building some form.

Charleston Battery news and notes

  • Current record: 11-5-8, 41pts

  • The Battery got back on track last Saturday as a 1-0 win over Rochester Rhinos arrested a seven match winless skid which has slipped Charleston down to third.

  • The lone goal of the match came seven minutes from time as Justin Portillo scored with a free-kick to get the vital result.

  • That goal earned Portillo a place on the USL Team of the Week, as he also completed 51 of his 56 passes, while team mate Taylor Mueller earned a place on the USL Team of the Week bench.

  • The Battery will have to manage without Romario Williams for this match as he serves his yellow card accumulation suspension.
