SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC got a much needed win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Wednesday night at Toyota Field. Kris Tyrpak opened the scoring for San Antonio FC in the 14th minute after a strong header from the edge of the box allowed him to put away Greg Cochrane’s looping cross for his sixth goal of the season. Billy Forbes could have made it two in the 43rd minute as he was played through by Tyrpak but his shot was right at WFC2 keeper Sean Melvin. San Antonio FC was dominant throughout the match, but they couldn’t finish the chances that they presented themselves which has been a continuing trend for San Antonio. Vancouver could have equalized in the 79th minute when the ball bounced around in the box, coming off several Vancouver players before San Antonio defender Cyprian Hedrick managed to clear off the line after a try from Gloire Amanda.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. San Antonio FC needed a win to get back on track, having gone three straight matches without a victory, and just one in their last eight matches. That run saw San Antonio drop well out of the race for the top spot in the west, now at a seven point gap to Real Monarchs SLC.

  • 2. After going 268 minutes without a goal San Antonio FC finally broke the drought with Kris Tyrpak’s early goal, ending the longest goalless streak of the season for SAFC. The relief could be felt around Toyota Field, as San Antonio FC used that lone goal to get a much needed win.

  • 3. Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 continued their poor performance on the road, now sitting at 2-9-3 on the season away from home. Vancouver only have two more matches on the road the rest of the season, but will still need to lift at home as well to have any chance of a playoff charge.
