Tigres is a five-time Liga MX champion, most recently winning the Apertura 2016 and Apertura 2015 titles. The club has also won the Copa MX on three occasions, and claimed consecutive Campeon de Campeones title in 2016 and 2017. On the international stage, Tigres finished as runners-up in the past two editions of the CONCACAF Champions League (2015-16, 2016-17), and were SuperLiga champions in 2009.

Founded in 1988, Santos Laguna is one of the youngest yet most popular teams in Liga MX. The Coahuila club has won five first division titles, most recently winning the 2015 Clausura and the 2015 Campeon de Campeones match. Santos also earned their first Copa MX title in 2014, and has played in the CONCACAF Champions League final on two occasions, falling to Monterrey both times in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 editions of the competition. Santos Laguna most recently visited Toyota Field on July 7 when they faced off against San Antonio FC.

An 8,000-seat stadium, Toyota Field opened in 2013 and has been the home of the USL club San Antonio FC since the spring of 2016. The facility was acquired in 2015 by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, in partnership with Spurs Sports & Entertainment who now control all operations of the facility along with the neighboring STAR Soccer Complex.
