Independence, OCB look to build on midweek victories

MATTHEWS, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence and Orlando City B will both look to build on midweek victories when they meet on Saturday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews, with the Independence hoping to add to their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charlotte Independence news and notes

  • Current record: 12-4-7, 43pts

  • The Independence edged out Bethlehem Steel FC in a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night that saw Enzo Martinez score the only goal of the game.

  • Goalkeeper Cody Mizell put in a stellar display to allow Martinez’s goal to stand as the winner, posting a seven-save shutout for his fifth clean sheet of the season.

  • Martinez is now fourth in the USL with 13 goals this season, as he and Jorge Herrera (12) are the only teammates with double-digit goals in the USL this season.

  • Charlotte is 5-0-1 at home since moving into the Sportsplex at Matthews, and has conceded only three goals in those six contests.

Orlando City B news and notes

  • Current record: 7-6-10, 31pts

  • OCB took a 3-0 victory against Ottawa Fury FC on Wednesday night as the club extended its undefeated streak to nine games, and moved into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

  • Hadji Barry had two goals and an assist in the victory, and now leads Orlando with seven goals this season.

  • Goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. also had another stellar performance, saving a penalty kick as part of a nine-save shutout. Edwards is fifth in the USL with 66 saves this season.

  • Orlando’s last defeat came on June 20 when the side fell to Ottawa at TD Place, with the side having gone 3-0-6 since that contest.
