Top-three clash sees Rangers host first-place Monarchs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Swope Park Rangers play host to Real Monarchs SLC on Friday night at Children’s Mercy Victory Field in a top-three clash in the USL Western Conference, which could see the Monarchs take another step toward the USL Regular Season Championship. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.

Swope Park Rangers news and notes

  • Current record: 12-5-4, 40pts

  • The Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw by Orange County SC last Saturday night as an early goal by Kharlton Belmar was cancelled out by OCSC early in the second half.

  • Belmar’s goal was his team-leading seventh of the season. The 2015 USL Rookie of the Year has scored 22 goals in three seasons in the league.

  • The draw saw the Rangers’ winless streak to reach three games, leaving the club 11 points behind the Monarchs with 11 games to play.

  • Former Swope Park midfielder James Musa, who earlier this month was signed by Sporting Kansas City, was called up to New Zealand’s National Team for World Cup Qualifying in September.

Real Monarchs SLC news and notes

  • The Monarchs recorded a 2-0 victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC last Saturday to move 10 points clear in the Western Conference.

  • Chandler Hoffman scored his 14th goal of the season in the victory, moving him one back of current USL Golden Boot leaders Dane Kelly of Reno 1868 FC and Romario Williams of the Charleston Battery.

  • Goalkeeper Connor Sparrow was named to the USL Team of the Week as he recorded a five-save shutout – including a penalty kick save – against the Switchbacks.

  • Real’s Charlie Adams and Sebastian Velasquez have recorded six assists apiece this season, putting both in the top five in the USL.
